How do we measure the ionosphere?

Our measuring network focuses on the Earth's ionosphere. It's an upper atmospheric layer which is located approximately in the heights from 60 km to 1000 km. Thanks to the solar activity, the neutral gas is ionized in the ionosphere so the low temperature plasma is created there. Except the Sun, the ionospheric plasma can be influenced by the Jupiter magnetic storms, meteors or some strong gamma ray bursts. In accordance with the height where the plasma is loca…

HF Data Analysis

What is supplied by the supplemental HF measurement?

The VLF measurement gives us the basic paramteres of the upper D ionospheric layer. Within the digisonde measurement, we can get the similar diagnostics for the E and F region, possibly the sporadic E layer. However, if some more informations about the phenomenon influencing the ionosphere are required, another measurement needs to be conducted. The high frequency measurement, in fact, has a quite broad range of use.

How to register an observatory to the Ionozor network

Observatory is a place where multiple measurement stations or project can be situated. The typical example of that place is an astronomical observatory.

Stations send files containing measured data to the server space.astro.cz through SCP protocol. At first, a station has to generate a key pair (if it has not done it already), that will be used for station authentication when communicating with server.

What do we measure by the SID monitors?

The SID monitors are inductive coils that receive radio signal from a transmitter with the characteristic frequency given. While the signal spreads through the ionospheric plasma, its intesity changes in dependence on the current electron density. We model the electron plasma frequency using the measurement of the radio signal intensity level, which helps us to determine other quantites and phenomena. The transmitter’s characteristic …
